Keeping renewable energy in Sacramento County reliable

Reliable Energy Storage
The Blacksmith Energy Storage Project is a state-of-the-art battery energy storage system designed to add electrical grid flexibility for Sacramento County. The Project features batteries with a capacity of up to 200 megawatts (MW) over a 4-hour duration. This is enough energy storage to power roughly [XXX] Sacramento County homes and businesses. This Project will support the healthy operation of the electrical grid and the integration of renewable energy sources into the County.
This Project will help the State, County, and SMUD achieve their renewable energy and decarbonization mandates.

How it Works
Battery energy storage systems balance the load on the electrical grid by safely storing excess energy from the grid when excess energy is generated, then discharging this stored energy back to the grid when electricity demand is high.
This helps utilities optimize power generation resources, reduce costs, and ensure a reliable supply of electricity to customers.

Project Location
The Blacksmith Energy Storage Project is located in the unincorporated Franklin area of southern Sacramento County, California.
